Guided Course: Create Unique Macramé Bags

Guided Course: Design and weave your macramé bag with your own style Now it's your turn to transform threads and knots into a unique and functional piece of textile. This project invites you to create a bag from scratch, combining aesthetic exploration, technical design, and artisanal craftsmanship with macramé. You don't need previous experience in fashion or pattern making; just a desire to experiment with materials, textures, and shapes while discovering your own style. Throughout the process, you'll learn how to develop an inspirational mood board, define proportions and structure, create intentional sketches, and finally weave your bag step by step with professional finishes. Whether you're looking for a minimalist or decorative piece, this project will give you the tools to transform an idea into a real, usable object. Don't know where to start? Here are five ideas to inspire you and adapt them to your liking: 1. Naturally inspired bag: earth tones and organic shapes Create a nature-inspired bag. Choose a neutral or warm color palette (sand, olive green, terracotta) and play with knot patterns that mimic leaves, waves, or plant textures. Ideal for a relaxed, bohemian style. Example: Rounded bag in beige cord, with fringe details and leaf-shaped knots, natural wood handles. 2. City bag: practical and modern Design a more structured and understated bag, designed for everyday use. Play with geometric shapes, solid colors (black, gray, wine, deep blue), and short or shoulder straps. This exercise is ideal for implementing symmetry and functionality. Example: Rectangular black drawstring bag with a cross handle and diamond-shaped knot pattern. Sliding knot closure and flat bottom. 3. Mini party bag: small, elegant and eye-catching Create a compact bag for special events. Use bright or brightly colored cords and experiment with decorative details like tassels, beads, or braids. This format will allow you to practice finer knots and delicate finishes. Example: Mini clutch in gold with a zigzag design, button knot closure, and thin bracelet-style handles. 4. Multifunctional bag: adapt size and shape to your routine Consider a versatile bag that you can use for different activities: carrying notebooks, your phone, personal items, or even art supplies. Design with practicality in mind, incorporating internal dividers, sturdy handles, or useful details. Example: Tote bag in raw cord with woven front pocket, reinforced rectangular base and long handles to hang over the shoulder. 5. Bag with graphic identity: explore patterns and contrast Draw inspiration from graphic or ethnic motifs to create a striking bag. Play with color contrasts (black and white, blue and mustard), repeating shapes, and complex knots to create a visually striking design. Example: Triangular bag with a black zigzag pattern on a white background, long fringes at the base and a top closure with intertwined knots. This project is more than a technical exercise: it's an opportunity to express who you are through a handmade object. Observe, draw, experiment with combinations, and, above all, enjoy the process. In the end, you'll have a bag that's not only useful but also deeply yours. Share your creation with the community and proudly show off your handcrafted design! ”

Mapi Casafranca is a business manager by profession and a textile artist by vocation. Passionate about handmade products since she was little, every fiber she weaves for AMARENA, her sustainable artisan brand, is thanks to the afternoons she spent weaving alongside her mother and grandmother.

AMARENA arose from her interest in natural materials and a desire to keep the tradition of ancestral weaving alive through accessories. Today, Mapi’s brand is committed to fair trade and sustainable production that combines the traditional techniques of Peruvian artisans with carefully designed finishes.
