Information Design Specialization for Infographics and Visual Storytelling

Final Project: Create a Narrative Infographic with Illustrated Data Visualization Objective The goal of this final project is to apply all the techniques learned in the course to create an original narrative infographic, combining data visualization, illustration, visual storytelling, and infographic design. You’ll transform a complex topic into a visually engaging, informative piece that tells a story clearly and creatively, using shapes, colors, and layouts. This is your chance to blend design and data into a powerful visual communication tool. Project Description You will design a complete infographic poster or interactive visual piece that communicates a meaningful story based on real or researched data. Your work should include: 1. A clear data brief and story structure 2. Custom illustrations or collaged visuals 3. A well-thought visual metaphor or theme 4. A visual narrative layout with legible, accessible elements 5. Optional 3D elements or animated transitions if desired Your final infographic should combine both informative and artistic elements, reflecting your ability to visualize data and build an emotional connection with your audience. Project Components 1. Research and Story Planning • Define a topic that matters to you (social issue, science, culture, personal interest, etc.) • Research and collect reliable data from credible sources • Write a brief narrative arc for your visualization: What’s the story? What do you want to say? 2. Sketching and Visual Strategy • Create a data brief and visual storyboard to plan the structure • Decide how to visually represent your message (charts, icons, diagrams, characters) • Choose a color palette, fonts, and overall style that enhance the story 3. Data Visualization & Illustration • Design custom visual elements in Adobe Illustrator or your preferred software • Create clear, legible data charts integrated into the story • Add realistic or conceptual illustrations to support the narrative 4. Infographic Layout and Design • Use composition and spacing to create flow and hierarchy • Integrate text elements: titles, explanations, legends, and labels • Consider accessibility: balance visuals with readable typography 5. Polishing and Exporting • Review, refine, and apply feedback if possible • Prepare a mobile-friendly version or alternative layout for different formats • Export in web and print-ready versions, and prepare a short presentation or mockup Final Submission • Infographic file, optimized for print and digital (PDF or PNG) • Process documentation, including your topic brief, sketches, and visual drafts • Short written reflection on your creative choices and the impact of the story • Optional: mobile/animated version or 3D visualization Tips for Success •Choose a topic you care about—passion makes storytelling stronger • Keep clarity in mind: balance visual creativity with information hierarchy • Use repetition and alignment to make your layout more coherent • Don’t overload the viewer—leave breathing space and guide the eye • Think about your audience and how they’ll interact with the piece Great infographics don’t just show data—they tell stories, connect ideas, and spark curiosity. This is your chance to give shape to information, transforming facts into meaningful visual experiences.”
