About the final project for: Pattern design for homeware products

Designing products for homeware

“Thank you so much for joining me on this course! The things I have shared are taken directly from my own practice, so I hope you find them helpful and inspiring. It has been a great pleasure being your teacher! I really feel that creativity and play are a big part of living a wholehearted life, so I encourage you to feel free and allow yourself a judgment-free space to play and explore. Develop your own creative language, figure out how you would draw lots of different things, and create a unique project. As a reminder, I have summarized the main steps you should follow to design your own collection of color-inspired patterns: The Mood Board Begin collecting inspiring images and references related to print, pattern, color, and home decor. Consider your own influences and what brings you to this course. So, look for and gather your inspiration, and consider the kind of products you would like to see in the world and what kind of space you might like to design for. You will use this as the first step on a path to figuring out what direction to take in your project. From here, create a mood board that will stay by your side and be like a roadmap for the artwork you will develop.

Drawing Motifs Using your mood board as a guide, begin the drawing process. Draw as many motifs as you can, then select your favorite ones so you can begin building a library of motifs you can use in your artwork.
The Digitized Drawing Digitize your favorite motifs so you can use them for your project.
The Hero Pattern Assemble these motifs into your first hero pattern and create a seamless repeat pattern. Then, refine it to make it the best it can be.
Coordinates Create some coordinates (a secondary coordinating pattern) and a stand-alone illustration that fits with the collection you're developing. Now you have a mini-collection!
The Color Palette Investigate your own unique relationship to color and develop an inspired color palette that you will apply to your collection.
Mock-Ups Bring these pieces into an "in situation" home decor mock-up so that you can see if the collection is successful and make any necessary adjustments.
The Collection Pull everything together with a name for the collection as well as your prints, and develop a story for your collection so that it's easy to share with others!
Don't forget to upload your finished project to the forum! You can do so by clicking on "Create your project". Remember to share both the final result and the steps that have led you to it, adding a brief explanation about what you have done in each one. Domestika has a great community where we all want to grow and learn. You can meet other like-minded creatives! I encourage you to engage with the forum so you can motivate and encourage each other. You can learn things by looking at others' work or questions they have asked along the way. I will be there too as often as I can to give you some feedback and answer your questions. I can't wait to see what you have been working on! Happy creating and I will see you soon! ”

“So thank you so much for taking my course. I hope you've enjoyed doing it as much as I've enjoyed teaching it. For a final project, we're going to create our own unique collection of print and pattern for the home. Before we leave, I'm going to give you some helpful tips that might help you throughout the process. First, let's talk about digital drawing. So I use a Wacom tablet to do all of my drawings on the computer. I've had a range of Wacom tablets from the cheapest, simplest one you can get to a much, much fancier one. And I have to say my favorite one is the smallest, cheapest option....”
