About the final project for: Sketchbook for Illustrators: Color & Texture Toolbox

Illustration for Children's Books

“Congratulations! You have reached the end of this course. Thanks for taking part! I hope you feel more confident about using a variety of new color combinations and textures in your artwork. It's now time to work on your project. This could mean finishing the design you started by completing the course tasks or making a brand-new project! Either way, I strongly suggest you take the time to gather inspiration and make a unique project of your own. Make sure to keep track of your progress with different pictures of each step. It'd be great if you could also explain the choices you've made along the way and tell us if you have any doubts. This will help me guide you better if you need advice. Let's do a quick review of what we've done during this course and put everything you've seen into practice: The Materials First of all, gather up your materials and find a sketchbook that fits your needs for the color and texture toolbox you will be creating. The Color Palette Explore color and texture by assigning emotions and feelings to the colors that you use. Remember to allow yourself to play and enjoy the process! Now move from the abstract to the figurative. Apply the palettes you explored previously and see how unique color combinations generate the most interesting landscapes. Next, let the colors inspire you to create unique characters. The Narrative Now that you have a selection of palettes in your toolbox, explored landscapes, and made different characters, it's time to tie them together into a story. Choose a character and a landscape scenery and write down a few lines for a simple storyline.

The Sketch Sketch out your ideas into a few thumbnails. Generate as many options as you deem necessary until you find the right scene, then turn your favorite into a final sketch.
With your final sketch in hand, analyze the mood of your story and the scene you've chosen. Decide which one of the color palettes from your toolbox will be the ideal one to transmit the mood of your story. The Linework Do the linework on your chosen paper and then begin filling out the bigger areas of color with wet media. Once this is dry, add details with dry media. Go from light to dark. Finalize by adding shadows and final details.
I look forward to seeing what springs out of your imagination and how you apply the different parts of this process to your own personal practice. The Final Touches Clean up your artwork. Once you're happy with the overall look, scan or photograph it ready to share with the world.
And that's all! I can't wait to see what you've come up with. You can share your work with us so by clicking on "Create your project". Remember to share both the final result and the steps that have led you to them. It would be great if you showed a picture of each step and added a brief explanation about what you have done in each one. I will be there, commenting or answering any questions you may have in the forum, just please be patient with replies! You can also upload your work to social media using the hashtag #RachelKatstallerDomestika. It's been wonderful having you here and I can't wait to see your beautiful work! See you in the forum!”
