About the final project for: Illustration Techniques with Digital Watercolor

Portrait illustrated with digital watercolor

“Well, my dear students… we have reached the end of this course. I leave you a small video as a summary of everything we have been working on. I hope you have learned a lot and, above all, enjoyed the process! Now I can say that you know 100% all my tricks and secrets, and here is the magic of this job. Personally, I think that sharing knowledge is something wonderful, and together we form a kind of creative family. Finally, I encourage you to do an introspection of yourselves to find what it is that you want to transmit with your creations, look for what it is that turns your stomach, what it is that makes you cry and try to put that on the canvas. In this way, over time, you will find a path in which you feel comfortable and represented, and that, my friends, is the true style. Anyway, if you can't think of anything that you're totally convinced with, I recommend taking inspiration from the works of your favorite artists (as a learning exercise it's great), since art history teaches us that we all learn by watching how they work the people we like. Only time and practice will teach you to find your own way! Remember to share the final project finished in the forum by clicking on "Create your project". Share both the final result of the project and the steps that have led to it. It would also be great if you showed a picture of each step and added a brief explanation about each one. So I can give feedback. On the other hand, if in addition to the Domestika community, you want to share your creation with everyone, you can upload photos of them to Instagram with the hashtag #RicardilusDomestika Now yes, it has been a real pleasure to undress in front of you. Remember that I will be in the forum answering all your questions as soon as possible ... I am human, I only have two hands and ... I am autonomous! So I ask you a little patience. Thank you very much and a big hug!”

“Now, a small summary than seen during the course. We saw the necessary Photoshop tools for the project. We study the brush tool and how to take advantage of the settings offered by the program Later, we learned to create a pencil that simulated graphite well with which we made the base of the portrait. I taught how to create digital watercolor brushes starting with stains, chinese ink or watercolor graphite forming a gallery of brushes after digitizing them. Then, we saw how to prepare a moodboard that inspired us and served as the basis for the composition of the portrait. With the digital...”

Ricard—aka Ricardilus—López’s passion for drawing started when he was three years old, always surrounded by pencils, paints, and sketchbooks, although his vocational calling for illustration started at the age of sixteen when he began his art studies.

He started with Fine Art studies for one year, which he later changed for Higher Level studies in Animation and 3D at EASD Pau Gargallo, in Barcelona, Spain, as he always loved the idea of bringing his drawings to life. During that time, he also took several illustration courses and completed his studies with a short animated film (La Folie), for which he was selected and rewarded by many renowned competitions. He then studied Graphic Arts at the Escuela Joso in Barcelona and graduated in 2017. Currently, he devotes all his professional energy into illustration, alternating many different types of projects that all relate to art in some shape or form.

His illustrations are usually based on the female figure, although he strongly believes that a good illustrator should never stay within a particular style, and is always looking for new areas and techniques to learn and include in his work. This has secured a long list of major clients for Ricard, including Penguin Random House, Planeta, TSL Jewellery (Hong Kong), Joyería Suárez, SofarSounds, or the National Art Museum of Cataluña (MNAC), in Barcelona, Spain.
