About the final project for: Visual Development: Illustrate Imaginary Settings

Visual Development: Illustrate Imaginary Settings

“ We've reached the end of this course! Thank you for joining me. I do hope you've enjoyed the process. By using the ideas and guidance I have given you throughout this course, you’re now free to go ahead and get creative with your own project. To help you, I will sum up here the main steps you need to follow to complete your project. Make sure to keep track of your progress with different pictures of each step. It would be great if you could also explain the choices you've made along the way and tell me if you have any doubts. This will help me understand your creative process and guide you better if you need advice. The Brief and Mood Board Establish your own brief for a visdev project. Create a theoretical story and character that will work as a base for the environment you are creating. Follow the guides and make use of the suggested questions to start off.

The Thumbnails Work on the initial thumbnails to decide which composition you’ll go for so that the environment properly communicates what you want to say. You can thumbnail in any media and make as many thumbnails as you want. Just make sure that you are focusing on creating an overall view, and don't engage too much in details.
Out of all the options, create a final thumbnail. You will do so by picking up aspects that you liked from the other thumbnails and mixing them together.
The Design Clean the thumbnail a little bit, but don't worry too much about it being super polished! It just has to be understandable and clear to the eye but does not need to have a polished rendering. Try to synthesise where you can so you don’t get lost in unnecessary details. Add some room dressing to create personality and showcase the character’s life and personality. Research from pictures and real-life items so you can introduce RELATABLE items. You want to showcase the character’s personality, not just do prop design!
Colour and Lighting Colour and add lighting using the principles of colour theory to further express the mood of the scene. Use the resources given to elevate the overall feeling in the scene.
The Presentation Lastly, present your work as if it were a pitch to an art director or client. Defend why you chose to go with that idea and how and why it works within the brief.
And that is it! Congratulations! I'm excited to see your work, so don’t forget to share your project on the forum! You can do so by clicking on ‘Create your project’. I’ll be checking in from time to time to look at your posts and answer your questions, but the forum is also an amazing opportunity to give and receive feedback from fellow creatives. Get involved with your peers! And if you also want to promote your work on social media, use the hashtag #LaraxDomestika so I can find you and share your work! Thank you for trusting me and I hope to hear from you soon! ”

“So we reached the end of the course. Well done. I hope you enjoyed learning as much as I enjoyed teaching. As you've seen, being a visual development artist is to visually define A story establishing its mood. to help support the characters and the context they live in. Now I would like you to create your own room. First off, define your own brief for a visual development project. Remember to make use of the suggested questions just in case you get stuck. Next, spend some time researching for your pool of imagery for your inspiration. It's really useful to create a mood board from these. Po...”

Larisa Bumb, better known as Lara Pickle, is a Spanish-Romanian visual development artist based in the UK. Inspired by the cartoons of her childhood, she always knew she wanted to draw for a living. Although she studied animation, she found that her passion lay elsewhere in the industry. She loves the behind-the-scenes work of developing characters and the environments they live in, as it gives her the freedom to explore her imagination and tell stories through her art.

Over the course of her career, Lara has developed designs for animated shows like Nickelodeon’s Pony, Netflix’s Dead End: Paranormal Park, Nella the Princess Knight, and Powerbirds, as well as the musical P.S. I’m a Terrible Person and the comic Kajko and Kokosz. She has also published her own graphic novel Estoy fatal, gracias.
