Modeling 3D Patterns with Rhino Grasshopper
“During the lessons I taught you all the secrets to modeling with algorithms, now it's your turn! Follow these basic steps to complete your project. Don't just copy my example, but experiment and invent something new. In this way, you will learn to independently apply the techniques I taught you and you will give more space to creativity. • First study Grasshopper's basic interface and logic. • Then, become familiar with the control of essential geometric entities, ie curves and surfaces, in order to manage and manipulate the data lists and selection tools in Grasshopper. • Once you become more confident, you can develop your 3D pattern: first build the two-dimensional pattern and then develop it as a set of three-dimensional surfaces. • Finally, convert the pattern into a 3D printable model giving thickness to the shape and taking care to eliminate any disconnection of the surfaces. Now share your project in the forum! Show everyone both the final result and the processing steps, documenting each step with an image and describing what you did with a brief explanation. As soon as possible, I will be happy to comment on your work. Look at the projects of colleagues and encourage them by commenting on what they have shared: do not miss the precious opportunity to interact with the creative community. Thanks again for making this journey with me! ”

“Final project Our course is over; thank you for following my lessons and having made this journey with me to discover computational design. During the lessons I tried to show you that, by studying the right technique, you can use algorithms creatively thanks to Grasshopper. Algorithms are the language of contemporaneity. During the course you have seen how they can be used and how they can become a powerful tool to achieve unimaginable results. Your final project can range from small to large scale. Shoes, jewelry, automotive, architecture: nothing can hold back your experimentation and cre...”

Arturo Tedeschi
A course by Arturo Tedeschi
Arturo Tedeschi is an architect and computational designer who lives and works in Milan. After studying architecture in Naples, he went on to work in multiple architecture and interior design studios. He later discovered algorithmic modeling, which combines his two greatest passions: programming and design.
Driven by his fascination for this branch of modeling, he became a self-taught expert on the subject and even wrote a book about it called Architettura Parametrica – Introduzione a Grasshopper, which has seen success in the form of new editions, a translation into English, and multiple printings. Since then, he's been traveling around Italy sharing his knowledge with students and providing consulting services for businesses, architecture studios, and universities.
