About the final project for: Travel Sketches in Watercolor: Capture your Surroundings

Travel Sketches in Watercolor: Capture your Surroundings

“Congratulations! You have now come to the end of this Domestika course. Thank you for your participation and I hope not only to have given you an insight into watercolor painting, but also to have shared my passion for this art form and plein-air painting with you. Now it's time to work on your course project, which means filling a double page spread in your sketchbook with different sketches, both the warm-up sketches and the study and atmospheric sketch of your chosen scene. Here's a quick recap of how to paint an outdoor scene using the wet-on-wet technique and capture the atmosphere of the place: The place Think about what or where you would like to paint and which places you find particularly inspiring. Then explore the selected environment a little: look for a motif, think about the atmosphere, create small stamp sketches and write down any useful information. The preliminary sketch Draw sketches of the final scene in a smaller sketchbook. You focus primarily on composition and perspective.

The gray value and color study Transfer the composition to your watercolor sketchbook: draw two stamp sketches and one larger sketch. The first small sketch is used for the gray value study, in which you test the composition and the painting style. With the second small sketch you create the color study. Think about the abstraction of the colors. Remember to heavily reduce and abstract everything!
The atmospheric sketch Use the knowledge gained from the grayscale and color studies to capture the atmosphere of the scene. Change the painting style and colors if necessary, and focus on atmosphere and contrast. Work in the final details, but not too many! These should only be indicated here. And don't forget to label your sketches at the end.
The image processing To document your work and showcase it on social media, take photos of your sketches, including on location. Then edit them in an image editing program of your choice to adjust the brightness and color tones or to emphasize certain details.
Once you are satisfied with the result, you can upload your project to the forum and share it with the community. Simply click on "Create your project". I'm very excited! If you have any questions about the materials, the process or the technique, or if you want to share ideas, please use the forum! There you can also exchange ideas with other course participants and find inspiration. I'll stop by as often as I can and give you feedback and advice. Until then, I wish you lots of fun painting! ”

First we got to know our materials and techniques. After that we did some exercises like painting wet-on-wet and simplifying a scene. Then I told how to best prepare your pleinair. After that we went out and have quick sketches, color studies and painted greyscale studies. From these impressions we finally created an atmospheric image and decorated with writing.
