About the final project for: Illustrated Travel Sketchbook: Recording Nature

Illustrated Travel Sketchbook: Recording Nature

“We have reached the end of this journey together, but this is only the beginning of a new path. I hope you have enjoyed the course and that it has inspired you to develop your travel journal and to continue your journey at Domestika. Now let's review the key phases of the project: a few pages from your naturalist adventure notebook. I would like you to briefly explain what you have done in each creative phase and to accompany the explanation with one or more images. Inspiration Start by defining the place or reason for inspiration. The universe is infinite and tiny at the same time: you can choose from a magnificent journey to the scene of a bumblebee pollinating a flower.

The materials Gather the materials you will need for your adventure, always prioritizing portability and comfort. It is not necessary to take everything to the field, a good part of your notebook can be developed once back at your desk with a more varied and comfortable display of materials.
Conceptualization of the scene Organize a visual summary of the main elements and ideas to bring to your page. Remember to exercise extreme caution when taking samples, and always favor "collecting" through photography and written notes. Observe, discover, investigate and record. Curiosity is the intrinsic quality of artists, scientists and explorers; and the ideas that will shape the notes in your notebook. During this phase, also define the concepts to represent, if you will use graphic elements to reinforce them and how to organize them on the page so that they are narratively interesting.
First page Start with the simplest. Develop a first page based on a drawing that you find simple and approachable. Remember to include color annotations or other information that you think is relevant, and draw from a geometric approach, trying to get the structure and proportions right. Complement your drawing with colors and annotations.
Second page It's time to draw on the second page. Remember that you can integrate written elements, maps, some pressed sample, etc. Everything that contributes to the narrative and aesthetic strength of your notebook.
Third page As you progress page by page, the idea is to vary the themes, challenge levels, and graphic solutions.
Now share your final project with the community by clicking on "Create your project". Remember to share both the final result and the steps that have led you to it. I am looking forward to seeing your project and giving you my vision. Although I ask for your patience, I will try to access the forum as much as I can and what my professional projects allow me. Finally, I want to invite you to actively participate in the forum, not only sharing your progress, but also giving advice and trying to help the rest of the community. See you on the forum!”

“Final project Thank you for joining me at the end of this journey. Curiosity is the quality shared by artists, explorers and scientists and it is also the motivational energy which will be behind your notebook notes. Introduce yourself, first of all, with a naturalistic attitude, hunger for knowledge, an infinite capacity to be amazed and, above all things, a lot of commitment to preserve. Take light and accessible materials with you. When you are in the field, collect everything you can, but do it using your senses, your mind, your camera and your pencils. Consider, furthermore, that you c...”

Naturalist Illustrator

Antonia Reyes, or as some know her, Antonia Pajarito, defines herself as a naturalist illustrator. She has become an expert in depicting the native flora and fauna of Chile. Her relationship with nature always begins with exploration, then moves on to artistic interpretation from her studio. Her goal is to create illustrations that move viewers and show the beauty of the earth. Her method is entirely analog, using pencils and watercolors on paper.
Most of her projects are independent, as she is passionate about combining illustrations with experiences, workshops, excursions, etc. She shares her work and discoveries on social media and on her website, both of which have become her logbooks.
