Tufting for Beginners: Design Colorful Textile Art

“We have now come to the end of this course. Thank you for the participation! I hope you had as much fun as I did. I'm really looking forward to your project. Here I have summarized the most important steps that you should consider when tufting carpets in as general a manner as possible. It's not about you imitating my design, it's about you experimenting yourself and letting your own inspiration run free. • First create a design for your carpet and transfer it to the canvas. Don't forget to trace the design in reverse, because the rug will be turned over later. Also mark the colors of the surfaces.

• Set your tufting gun to minimum speed and get started! Fill in the areas individually depending on the color, from bottom to top. Use enough pressure to get the yarn through the fabric properly.
• When the entire area is filled, use a spatula to apply carpet glue to the canvas to secure the yarn. Spread the glue evenly and make sure all of the yarn is properly covered.
• After the glue has dried overnight, cut out the rug and finish the backing, both the border and the bottom. After you've glued the cotton canvas and fabric tape, feel free to put something heavy on top to apply pressure so everything sticks together well.
• Brush the front once to remove the loose fibers. Then you can trim the surface evenly with a trimmer. Also remove loose threads with scissors. Your rug is now complete!
Share your project in the forum by clicking on "Create your project". Load not only pictures of your finished rug, but also photos of your workflow to see the progress. You are also welcome to add a short description. Additionally, you can upload your work to social media using the hashtag #ZeyustudioDomestika! You have doubts, questions, ideas? In the forum you can present your projects and exchange ideas with other course participants. I will also be happy to give you feedback on your work and to give you advice. Until then, I wish you lots of fun tufting! ”

“final project I am glad that you all took part in the course. I will now briefly summarize the course again. First, we explored the techniques and tools together. Next, I showed you my creative process and how I choose colors for my project, for example. We illustrated our design and transferred it to the canvas. Then we tufted together, from the first shape to the trimming, and at the end the finishing of the back and front sides. Then I showed you like her a rug in a mirror or transform other objects. Now you are able to decorate each room with your own carpet. I'll give you a few final t...”

Trained in architecture, Zeyu Cheng currently works in textile art. Tufted tapestries allowed her to detach herself from the geometric confines of contemporary architecture and take refuge in a universe inspired by the psychedelic aesthetic of the 70s, giving free rein to youthful creativity.

Most of the pieces she makes are completely unique, featuring free forms, bright colors, and original motifs. She has had the opportunity to collaborate with clients such as Adidas, Jaded London, LYCHEE & FRIENDS, and Fashion Grunge magazine.
