About the video: Design Principles

Overview

“Next, you will learn about the rules and design principles that are at the heart of every data visualization or chart. I will walk you through the seven visual variables that are used to communicate data – shape, size, tone, location, texture, colour, and orientation – and the Gestalt principles. I will then guide you in using your personal data as a great starting point to learn these principles. Finally, I'll introduce the course project. ”

In this video lesson Stefanie Posavec addresses the topic: Design Principles, which is part of the Domestika online course: Analog Data Visualization for Storytelling. Explore the narrative potential of data and learn to create engaging imagery that tells a story using analog materials.

In data visualisation, data is our draftsman. Data follows our rules to draw out a specific design. This means that ultimately our dataset makes a lot of the design decisions for us. Our dataset ...”
