About the final project for: Fantasy Landscapes with Watercolor & Gouache

Fantasy Landscapes with Watercolor & Gouache

“You have reached the end of this course! Thank you for making it all the way here. It has been an amazing experience for me to be able to share my process with you. It is now time to work on your project. This could mean finishing the painting you started while completing the exercises or you could start a brand new project! Either way, I strongly suggest you take the time to gather inspiration and make a unique project of your own. Make sure to keep track of your progress with different pictures of each step. It'd be great if you could also explain the choices you've made along the way and tell me if you have any doubts. This will help me understand your creative process and guide you better if you need advice. Here are the main steps you should follow to complete your project: Colors and Background Begin by choosing a color scheme that inspires you and use it to paint a loose watercolor background with lots of texture and variation. It is the starting point for this technique so we want to create a background that fills us with ideas.

Reading the Background Spend a little time studying the page once it has dried, searching for shapes that spark ideas. Rotate the page, looking at it from different angles to see what jumps out at you. Allow yourself to find a few different ideas before choosing one to paint. Reference Photos Once you have an idea, you might want to look for reference photos to help you paint the scene as you have imagined it. For example, if you want your scene to have a big, twisty old tree but are not quite sure how this could look, a reference photo can help you with this. You may prefer to paint fully from your imagination—both methods are fine. The Painting Begin by painting the main elements of the scene. These will help you to establish a pleasing composition and capture the essence of your idea. These elements might include trees, large rocks or areas of water.
Once you have the main elements in place you can begin to add smaller details to fill your scene. At this stage, you can add plants, small bushes and other items that you want to include to flesh-out your idea.
Use the opacity of the gouache to layer these details freely in order to create depth in your scene, and continue until your painting feels complete.
I can't wait to see what you have created! Don’t forget to share your project on the forum. You can do so by clicking on "Create your project". I will respond to your posts and questions as soon as possible. In the meantime, I encourage you to take a look at what others created for this project and comment on their posts, too. Bye for now!”

“Final Project Congratulations, you've reached the end of the course. I hope you've enjoyed learning about gouache and watercolor and the exciting ways that these two can be combined to get the best out of both mediums. Now it's time to take everything that you've learned in the lessons and have a go at your final project. Your first step is to create a loose watercolor background and then take a bit of time to study the page and see what ideas come to you. Then, it's time to begin painting by adding the main elements to your scene and finishing it with the smaller details. As you practice u...”

Ruth Wilshaw is a full-time artist specializing in painting landscapes with gouache. As a child, she never missed an opportunity to draw or paint. Although she was always motivated by her inner creativity, Ruth was disappointed in the subjective attitude to art during college and decided to leave. Years later, she found inspiration from the show The Joy of Painting with Bob Ross, and once her artistic fire had been rekindled, Ruth was determined to explore painting once more, first with other mediums such as charcoal and watercolor before finally falling in love with gouache.

Since then, after amassing a large Instagram following of over 100K, she has established a full-time career and written the book Creative Gouache and continues to share her work and processes on social media.
