Pattern Cutting: Create Classic Tailored Trousers
“Congratulations! You've reached the end of this Domestika course. Thank you so much for enrolling and I hope you've enjoyed learning about how to make your own garments. Before saying goodbye, let's review the necessary steps to complete your project: a pair of classic trousers. Mastering the Techniques Start by familiarising yourself with the basic pattern techniques that I covered in this course. Learn how to make darts and create fluid curves with a pattern master. Acquaint yourself with the sewing machine by practising important stitches like the zigzag stitch. Finding Inspiration Create a mood board on Pinterest to gather inspiration for your piece. Choose something that both inspires you and suits your body shape. Remember, for this project, you will need to channel your creativity to produce a garment that's personal to you, so select a style that excites you! Once you have a design in mind, collect your measurements and fill out the Drafting Calculations Chart. Creating the Block Pattern Now, transfer your measurements to the trouser block. Use the resources I shared in the unit 'Making the Block Pattern' to guide you. Create the toile to further refine these measurements and adapt your block accordingly. Then, turn your block into a pattern with a 1 cm seam allowance and all the necessary details. When cutting the calico, don't forget to cut inside the line that you've drawn. If you cut outside, you will add millimetres to the pattern. It's important to get these details correct, or the garment won't hang well.

Don't forget to share your creations on the forum. because I'll be there from time to time just having a look at what you're doing. And you can share things with other students as well and compare what you're doing. To begin with, I showed you how to...”

A course by Monisola Omotoso
Monisola Omotoso is a designer and pattern cutter based in central London. She comes from a family of South American tailors and followed in their footsteps, making her first wearable pattern at just eight years old. She later studied art and design at Middlesex University where she discovered a love of pattern cutting. While studying, she won several competitions and during her final year, she designed her first commercial product, which was sold at retailers like Paul Smith.
After graduating, Monisola started her own namesake brand which she ran for 10 years, distributing her ranges across the world. She has designed stage outfits for musicians including David Bowie and U2 and her work has been featured in leading UK publications such as The Face, i-D, Fashion Weekly, and The Observer. Monisola also worked as a draper for Alexander McQueen. Now she helps others create clothing through 1:1 tuition, pattern-cutting kits, and sewing patterns.
