I like to use a lot of lines and shapes to represent the berries and the leaves rather than sketching real leaves and berries. The sketch is also a good opportunity to plan your negative and positive space to make sure there is a nice flow to your piece. Also, make sure your final piece is balanced from left to right and top to bottom, so it's pleasing to look...”

Mikaela Szumigraj is a macramé artist based in Halifax, Nova Scotia and the creative behind the studio String Theories Fiber Design. She studied aerospace engineering at university and worked full-time as an engineer. In search of a hobby to fill her time during the winter, she discovered macramé and never looked back.

She first began producing on a small scale back in 2017, and gained a lot of attention on Instagram during the pandemic. Mikaela now sells her creations via her online shop in the form of macramé kits, wall hangings, basket weavings, soft sculptures, and more. Over the last few years she has dedicated her time to developing a technique for creating macramé leaves and vines on driftwood, which she continues to share with over 25K followers on Instagram.
