About the video: The Cross Hatch Grid: Beginners Exercise

Overview

“In this lesson, we'll do a beginners exercise. We'll create a wood textile with a horizontal curve. With a ruler and a pencil, we'll begin by outlining/drafting a cross hatch grid onto the veneer. Once the grid is completed, we'll show you how to perform cross incisions.”

In this video lesson Tesler + Mendelovitch addresses the topic: The Cross Hatch Grid: Beginners Exercise, which is part of the Domestika online course: 3D Wooden Textiles for Beginners. Make flexible wooden textiles by measuring, cutting, and binding wood veneer and learning how to transform it into 3D structures.

“ The Cross Hatch Grid: Beginners Exercise In this lesson, I will teach you how to prepare the veneer for work. The first thing is to understand the fiber of the veneer. Here we have an oak veneer. Flatwood veneer has a directional pull. We can see the fiber. This is determined by the layout of the wood. The length of the veneer is much stronger than the width. When you bend the veneer on these lengths, it will bounce back, but if you bend it on its width, it will probably crack. Orli Tesler and Itamar Mendelovitch are the founders of Israel-based studio Tesler + Mendelovitch. They met while studying textile design at the Shenkar University of Engineering and Design. From the outset, they had opposing design ideologies: Itamar works methodically and precisely, while Orli is more impulsive, but they soon realized that the two approaches complemented each other and began collaborating on projects. After graduating, they opened their own studio with the aim of transforming known materials into new forms.

Their first product launch was the diamond wood coffee table and sitting stool, but they’ve since gone on to create a whole range of unique products including their best-selling wooden clutch. Through their studio, Orli and Itamar collaborate with interior designers and architects around the world to create site-specific installations, special editions, and specialist commissions. They also share their designs with over 10K followers on Instagram.
