About the video: Pre-production Planning: Color, Props, and Sets
Overview
“Now that you’ve created a sketch, the next step is to plan the visual and the production details of your project. Start by considering your budget and available materials. For example, in this course, I use myself as the model rather than paying for talent. During the sketch phase, I learned that, with a bit of ingenuity, I can be both in front and behind the camera. In this lesson, I will demonstrate how to choose the color scheme, set design, wardrobe, makeup, and source or create your props. You will see how I personalized my photography through prop and set design and how you, too, can tap into these skills yourself. Or better yet, discover a hidden talent through this process.”
In this video lesson Hugh Kretschmer addresses the topic: Pre-production Planning: Color, Props, and Sets, which is part of the Domestika online course: Photographic Illusions: Collage and Digital Compositing. Discover a three-part process for creating surrealistic photos that use in-camera and post-production techniques to trick the eye.

I found this great suit at a Goodwill. It was an antique double-breasted suit. In that particular suit, the buttons...”

A course by Hugh Kretschmer
Hugh Kretschmer is a professional photo-illustrator born and raised in LA, California. One of seven children, he was raised among artists and at the age of 13, his father, a photo-instrumentation engineer for McDonnell, introduced him to his first camera. He later went on to receive an Honors in his fine art Bachelor’s degree from the ArtCenter College of Design, before moving to New York to begin his career.
His work has been described as fanciful, curious, imaginative, unusual, and even a little creepy. Whether whimsical or somewhat more serious, none of his pieces lack his characteristic touch of quirk and irony. Throughout the years, he has been recognized by the International Photography Awards, American Photography, Communication Arts, PDN Photo Annual, and The Society of Publication Designers. His work has also appeared in numerous industry publications, books, podcasts, and blogs including Graphis, Juxtapoz, Plastik Magazine, and Vision Magazine as well as auctioned through Sotheby’s and placed on permanent display at the 9/11 memorial. Additionally, he has given workshops both nationally and internationally and is a regular team leader at The Eddie Adams Workshop.
