About the final project for: Expressive Lettering with Swashes and Flourishes

Expressive Lettering with Swashes and Flourishes

“Thank you so much for taking part in this course and I hope you've enjoyed it. It's now time to work on your project. This could mean finishing the lettering piece you started by completing the course tasks or making a brand-new project! Either way, I strongly suggest you take the time to gather inspiration and make a unique project of your own. Make sure to keep track of your progress with different pictures of each step. It'd be great if you could also explain the choices you've made along the way and tell us if you have any doubts. This will help me guide you better if you need advice. Here are the main steps to follow: The Place Choose a city or place name and think about some initial ideas for your lettering piece. How could you express the mood, style or feeling of your chosen place through letterforms? References Begin some research by gathering references that relate to the city or place, or to your idea. The Sketch Using pencil and paper or a tablet, sketch out some rough initial ideas with flourishes.

Once you've decided on which design you want to take forward, make several iterations of your design using the layering techniques you've learnt so far until you reach a final design that you're happy with.
The Vector Scan or export your final sketch in a format that you can place into Adobe Illustrator to begin the vectoring stage. Create a vector of your lettering piece in Adobe Illustrator. Again, you can use the layering technique to make and compare different iterations.
The Final Touches Once you have a final vector that you're happy with, add some colour to your design. Next, make a copy of the file and in this new file delete any previous iterations so that you just have your final vector. Then, duplicate this design onto a new layer and create the bevel effect.
Copy the various elements of your design into Photoshop. Remember to keep your layers named and well-organised. Apply the effects to add texture and shade to suit your design.
And that's all! I can't wait to see what you've come up with. You can share your work with us so by clicking on 'Create your project'. Remember to share both the final result and the steps that have led you to them. It would be great if you showed a picture of each step and added a brief explanation about what you have done in each one. I will be more than happy to answer any of the questions you might have along the way! I will try to get back to you as soon as possible. In the meantime, participate in the forum, comment on others' work, and interact with the community. See you there!”
