About the video: Research: Understanding Your Theme

Overview

“In any project, the images you create reflect a point of view. That's why it's important to be well-informed and to fully understand the dimension and impact of the images. So, before starting a project, personal or commercial, it's your job to do your own research. Being knowledgeable about your theme and the people you're photographing and collaborating with will enhance your artistic vision and interpersonal skills during the photo session. Once you've done your research, you can start to plan out your project and what you're looking to photograph. Start by printing out images that resonate with you and pin them to your wall, fridge, or door. Being around them and looking at them will allow you to understand and dissect what excites you in a photograph. This will help you look for similar feelings, patterns, and poses while you're photographing.”

In this video lesson Matilde Viegas addresses the topic: Research: Understanding Your Theme, which is part of the Domestika online course: Intimate Photography: Capture Emotive Portraits. Find your creative voice and enhance your portfolio by learning to plan and carry out emotionally-engaged photoshoots in an intimate setting.

“ Research: Understanding Your Theme In this lesson, we'll talk about the research behind a personal project. When I talk about doing personal projects around family members or partners, the research stage is prepared almost. You already know the person, you probably live with them, and some of the key aspects of their lives, you are already familiar with. The good thing about doing a project on them is that sometimes you show the picture to a family member or maybe your parents and they will tell you something that you probably didn't know before. That could be an important addition to you...”
