“ The Illustration's Background In this lesson, we'll start the final project. We'll take my sketch, bring it over into the final piece, and create the elements that will make the background and the textures. Let's talk about my document size. I like to do them around 17 inches on the maximum length at 350 dots per inch. I do this because this is a size that's great for blowing up to poster size or you can shrink it down to a spot size, and the image will look great and it's something that clients love. Looking at my variety of thumbnails, you'll notice I have narrowed it to two selections....”

James Yang is an Illustrator based in Brooklyn, New York. His grandfather is a famous artist, so he was creative from a young age, and was encouraged by his high school teachers to pursue a career in art. James later went on to study for a bachelor of fine arts in communication arts and design at Virginia Commonwealth University.
Since then, he has won over 250 awards for design and illustration, including Best of Show from 3x3 magazine. He has worked for publications like The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and WIRED, as well as advertising agencies around the world. More recently, he began focusing on writing and illustrating children’s books and won the Geisel Award for best book for young readers. He has also taught and lectured at a variety of institutions, including SVA Parsonswork.
