About the final project for: Fairy-Tale Illustration with Watercolors

Fairy-Tale Illustration with Watercolors

“You have reached the end of the course. Thank you very much for choosing me as your teacher, for me it has been an honor to share with you the world that I am passionate about. Now it's time to share your course project. Let me show you an example of how I would like to see it: The idea Think of a scene from your original characters or find a text from a story or book that you want to illustrate.

References and thumbnails Look for possible references, remember to look for free references and free use if you plan to trace poses or copy them as is. If you like copyrighted photos remember to only use them for inspiration without tracing. Make at least five thumbnails with different proposals. Remember the rules of composition. You can make your thumbnails in notebook, sheets or in a digital program. Finally, choose one of those thumbnails to make it just the way you want.
The sketch Now that you have your sketch, do the test of values and colors in digital or traditional. Also, define and clean the sketch more to have it clearer.
The tests Make several value tests and also the necessary color tests in digital or traditional. Do not forget to find your material for this test, choose your paper and watercolor.
Let's get to work Cut your piece of wood larger than your part, print your clean sketch if you did it digitally. Then trace your drawing onto the watercolor sheet carefully and smoothly.
The montage Mount your drawing or illustration on the wood and while you wait for it to dry, you do the traditional color tests to try to match the digital ones. Mix enough paint for large areas. When the paper is completely flat and dry then wet the area and apply the first wash or bottom coat. Let dry.
Your project Apply the paint layer by layer, working separately and letting one dry from the other. Then give your piece volume and add the details to your piece. Finally, when you finish the color then apply the details in white with gouache. If you like, apply details in gold or metallic paint.
Digitize and edit Disassemble the piece and remove the damaged paper from the corners. Finally, digitize the piece and edit it.
I ask you to have fun while carrying out your project. If your work is not what you expected, do not give up, be patient and keep working until you achieve the result you are looking for. Keep in mind that I only showed you my way of working, but you can take what works for you and adapt it to your own processes. Please don't forget to upload your project. I will give you feedback as soon as possible, but keep in mind that it may take me a while to respond. While you wait, I invite you to see the work of the rest of your colleagues. If possible, share with them tricks, opinions and learnings. At the end of the day, we can all learn from each other. See you soon!”

“Final project Thank you for joining me in this project. I hope it worked for you and you learned something. Before I say goodbye, I want to give you some final advice. Test for lightfastness after purchasing your paints. This is very important if you want your piece to last several years exposed on a wall. With watercolors it's a matter of practice. don't be discouraged, It also took me several years to be able to do what I do now. I went through different styles, materials and all that, but hopefully my point of view can guide you more to choose your own materials and shop a little more wi...”
