Retro Illustration: from Traditional Pencils to Digital Tools

“We have come to the end of the course! Thank you for coming with me. Hope you have taken a liking to it and feel comfortable creating your own retro illustration. Now is the time to prepare your final project. I encourage you to make your own creation, taking the time to seek inspiration and find the colors you like. To guide you, I will go through the key phases of the project. Take care to document the different stages of your creation and add a brief explanation of what you did in each of them as well as your choices. The sketches Start by drawing inspiration from all around you. Look on Pinterest, Instagram or in books and objects for ideas of subject but also of colors. Then make your first thumbnail sketches of your composition ideas. Work with a light colored pencil first, then go back to black pencil.

The ideal would be to do three or four to make the best use of the field of possibilities. When you are done choose one and rework the sketch to a larger size.
Texture creation On white paper, make some black textures that you can clean in Photoshop to integrate them into your final project.
Line art Now switch to Photoshop. Using the scanned sketch as a guide, make a clean line drawing. Remember to work on separate layers.
Solid colors and textures Once your line art is finished, you can apply the solid colors and add textures. Feel free to make several color combinations to find the one that suits you the best and highlights the details of your illustration.
Export your final project. Animation Finally, isolate one or two elements of your final project to make a simple GIF that you can share, if you wish, on social networks.
Well done ! I can't wait to see what you have created. Don't forget to share your final project on the forum. I also invite you to share with me your questions and needs for clarification. I will be happy to help you, step by step, and especially to see how you have appropriated this lesson that I took great pleasure in sharing with you. The creative community is always very constructive and caring. I encourage you to watch what your comrades have been up to and to comment on their posts. It will help you progress. For my part, I will stop by as soon as possible to comment on your plans. A big thank you and see you soon on the forum!”

After working for four years as an illustrators' agent, Alice Des set herself up as an independent artist. She has worked for Clit Revolution, a web series available on France.tv Slash, and the Manuel d'Activisme Féministe, by the same authors. She collaborates with the press (L'Obs, Les Echos, Milk, Dada, Causette) and brands (Adobe, Petrossian, Nicolas, Cluizel, Arte), as well as with the Slow Galerie in Paris where her work is exhibited and sold.

As a socially involved artist, Alice likes to work for projects that make sense. Her graphic universe oscillates between retro aesthetics and modern subjects, spontaneous drawing and the will to simplify, and digital tools and traditional techniques.
