About the final project for: Dressmaking: Draft and Sew a Shirred Dress

Dressmaking: Draft and Sew a Shirred Dress

“We’ve now come to the end of the course, I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did and are feeling inspired to create your own shirred design! It is now time to start working on your final project if you haven’t already. To help you, I will sum up here the main steps you need to follow to complete your project. Make sure to keep track of your progress. It'd be great to see the different steps and for you to explain the choices you've made along the way. The Design and The Fabrics Consider your influences and design your dress using the techniques outlined in this course. Feel free to use the croquis templates available in Unit 2 to have a play around with different designs.

Then, with your design in mind, choose the fabric you are going to use. There are endless options when choosing a piece of fabric for your project but make sure it’s floaty enough and not too stretchy so it can hold the shirring. Measures and Patterns Measure yourself and draw your pattern pieces. Remember to label your pattern before you transfer the markings onto your fabric and cut it.
Take it slow, practice your sewing techniques. You need to be confident with each technique before you begin your final project. Sewing Last, sew your dress! Enjoy the process of creating a beautiful custom handmade garment.
And voilà! You just made a beautiful shirred dress! Share your projects on the forum! I can’t wait to see them all! Remember to make the design unique to you. The more different projects you share the better. I will be in the forum as often as possible to give you advice, but you can also learn a lot from other students. Finally, please make sure to take good care of your dress, and your clothes in general. There are many ways to become more sustainable in our sewing practice and I hope you feel inspired to research these areas more. See you on the forum. Goodbye!”

I hope you leave here feeling super inspired to go away and create your shirred dress or top. Remember to celebrate every triumph and technique you learn. You'll see how rewarding it is to make your clothes and be self-sufficient in your own style. Before I say goodbye, let me give a quick recap of the steps we covered in this course. Elisalex is the founder of By Hand London sewing patterns, where she encourages and supports people who want to create their own made to measure clothes. Sewing, knitting, crochet, and DIY have always been her sanctuary. Elisalex delved back into the world of making with an old school friend when taking time off work to be a full-time mum. Motivated by the ability to breathe new life into dressmaking through social media, they founded By Hand London in 2012.

Since then, By Hand London’s reputation for original patterns has prevailed, with many more available sizes and patterns to choose from on their online store. The brand has recently collaborated with John Lewis to create printed patterns and Elisalex was awarded Designer of the month in August 2021 by Craft World.
