Resumes for Creatives: Craft Your CV and Cover Letter

“Congratulations. You’ve made it! Thank you so much for joining me. Now, it’s time to create your CV and cover letter. You've got this! Before saying goodbye, let me first refresh you on the step-by-step process to complete your project.

  • To begin, gather all the tasks you have completed in this course. Bring your Ikigai, USPs, career home, and company home to the forefront of your mind. Channel your inner Cindy Gallop and rouse yourself into action! Give yourself the best opportunity to write the perfect CV for your dream job. You know what you want, it's time to get it!
  • Start with your CV. Work through the different sections: About Me, Experience, Education, Skills, and Interests. Remember to highlight your USPs. Don't be afraid to flaunt your good qualities. Be proud of the things that make you unique!
  • Once you have everything written down, it's time to format it into a striking layout! Find a design that represents you. And remember to keep it clean, crisp, and clear. Take inspiration from the examples I shared in Unit 5. But also invest time in creating something that is personal to you. Use an aesthetic that you like. That way, the employer will get a true impression of who you are. That said, contain most of your creativity to your portfolio! The CV needs to be a factual document.
  • Next, move on to your cover letter or email. This will be the bait that lures your reader in. If it falls flat, your CV won't get a look-in. So, make it good! Refer to the guides I gave you to catch the recruiter's attention. I've been a recruiter for ten years; I know what they're looking for! Write who you are, why you love them, and why you’d be a good fit for them. Then, sign off.
  • So, you now have the recipe for a perfect application. All that's left to do is improve your prospects. Engage with social media to connect with people inside your industry. Take note of how they project themselves online; the activities they're engaging in; the people they're connected to. Take inspiration and learn from them. Develop your LinkedIn, Twitter, or Instagram to make yourself known!
And that's all. I'm excited to see what you've taken away from this course, so share your project in the forum. You can do this by clicking "Create your project" above. I also encourage you to help and give advice to other students – working together can be very helpful and inspiring. Conversation fuels creativity! I'll be reviewing your work too, and giving feedback as often as I can. See you there.”
