About the final project for: Realistic Botanical Watercolor Drawing

Realistic Botanical Watercolor Drawing

“I welcome you to the "Final Project" section! After all the efforts you have made during the course, it is time to share your result with the world. In order to show you all the steps of your creative process, I will show you how to structure your final project. The first step in reproducing our subject is observation. Look carefully at the plant in front of you, take pictures of it and observe it in the right light. I recommend the afternoon one, which makes the colors softer and more natural. Collect a few leaves and go home. The naturalness of the subject can only be obtained through direct observation.

Prepare the sheets for the sketches and start drawing freely. Don't give in to the temptation of rubber! When you make a mistake, start over by copying the traits that convince you. Then move on to the study of the leaf. Focus on chiaroscuro, texture and shapes.
At this point, transfer the highlights of your design to the cotton paper. Remember not to tread too hard on the pencil and to copy only the essential lines.
Before moving on to glazes, find your colors starting from the primary ones. Don't forget about the gray that will be used to desaturate the tones.
When you have applied the first coats of color, you can move on to realistic coloring taking into account details, textures and shades. To blend, use a clean brush when the color is still damp. Remember to allow time for your drawing to dry between coats.
I can't wait to admire your finished illustration. Don't forget to leave feedback to other people who have taken the course. I will try to be as much present as possible in the forum to be able to give you some advice and get to know each other better, but be patient if it takes me some time to do it. Thanks again for taking my course, I hope you enjoyed it! Soon! ”

Nadia Leo is a graphic artist, calligrapher, and illustrator. Curious and creative from an early age, she studied graphic design in high school and continued her education at an arts' lyceum to master both disciplines that would later define her career.

She spent many years creating graphic content for the advertising industry at a time when manual techniques like cut-outs, mock-ups, drawings, and collages were still the norm. As these traditional methods gave way to digital tools, Nadia wanted to explore the art of letters beyond the typography offered in classes and decided to dive into the world of calligraphy focusing on a more personal and artisan approach.

Thanks to this art form, she started to collaborate with fashion brands like Hermès and to create stationery for weddings and events. During lockdown in 2020, she rekindled her passion for drawing and discovered painting with watercolors, which opened a world of possibilities for illustrating plants and flowers. She currently shares her creations on Instagram and has designed her own collection of nature-inspired stationery items.
