About the final project for: Interior Decorating: Redesign Your Home with Upcycling

Creative Home Makeover with DIY Techniques

“Thank you so much for taking part in this course. I hope you’ve enjoyed it because now it’s your time to shine and do your room makeover. First, I recommend you go through the step-by-step process you’ve seen during the course and create a room that speaks about you. Then, take this final project as an opportunity to discover and nurture your style. These are the steps to complete your final project: Write your functionality list. Think of the bedroom you’ve chosen at the end of the previous unit, and go through all the things you need that room to do for you. Be very specific. How many people are going to sleep in this room? What other activities will you do in this room (yoga, reading, working, studying?…)? Does it need to have extra storage? For what types of things? Write all those needs down and pair them with the corresponding items. For example, if you will work in this room, you’ll probably need a desk. How big does this desk need to be? Does it have to have drawers? Does it need to be foldable because the room is tiny? Go through the things you already have and decide which ones to keep, which ones need a makeover and which ones you’ll get rid of. Play with layout options. Try different layout options and choose a winner using pieces of paper, an app, or moving the furniture around. Don’t be afraid to experiment! You might be surprised. Design the room. Considering the main “ingredients” we use to cook a room (color, repetition/contrast, maximalism/minimalism, and balance), it’s time to create a design board that will reflect all the elements you want to include in this bedroom.

Execute. My favorite part of the process: make your design come true. Don’t be afraid of getting your hands dirty. Paint, transform, strip and do whatever you need to do to turn this bedroom into your dream bedroom.
Share. Remember, you can share your questions, achievements, and the result of your project in the forum. I’ll be delighted to help you and encourage you. See you on the forum!”

María Vázquez is a Spanish decorator and creator of the online decoration school Dr. Livinghome. As a child she loved home decor and DIY, and furnished her own tree house-style cabin from repurposed items and materials. María started her career as a creative and art director, and in creating spaces for events, she reconnected with her childhood passion. After decorating her first home she began documenting the process through her blog, and Dr. Livinghome was born.

The blog later became an online home decoration service and María’s full-time business. She has collaborated with several furniture manufacturers and home improvement companies including Leroy Merlin, and Bruguer.
