About the final project for: Newspaper Design: Bring Stories to Life

Typographic hierarchies for newspapers

“Welcome to the "Final Project" section and thank you so much for taking this course with me. I hope that you enjoyed all our classes as much as I did and that you found them useful! I am now going to show you how to share each step of your final project with the whole community. Please, avoid making a replica of what I have shown you but rather employ these processes and techniques as a guide. Start by defining the brief. Share the aim of your publication, the main theme, its ideal audience and any other detail you think could be relevant. Then, gather your content and create a flat plan. This is to provide a clear objective when designing your pages. Share your flat plan!

Now, create your grids and choose your typography. Tell us about your decision-making process and share the chosen elements of your pages.
With this strong foundation upon which to build, it's time to begin laying out your pages. Always remember to make things visually interesting!
The following step is the revision. Let us know what you decided to change and why. Share some of your corrections too!
Once you have revised and corrected your page, finalise them and get them ready to be printed. Don't forget to edit the photos too.
Take your time with the project to ensure that your design decisions are considered and rationalised. Now, you can upload the finalised PDF and show the whole community the result of all your efforts and work.
I can’t wait to see what you create. I’ll be sure to let you know my thoughts when I can, though please remember that I’m often busy with ongoing projects. It’s also really important to express your opinion about other people's work as giving and receiving feedback is a great way of testing the impact of your work. I hope this will spark creative criticism and a free flow of ideas with your fellow students! Thank you so much again for taking the time to come on this course with me and I wish you all the best in everything!”

“Final Project We've reached the end of this course, but before I go, I'd like to revise the steps we took to complete our final project. If you have your content or are using an example like the one we used in the course, remember to create a brief of the pages you'd like to create. This is the foundation of your work. Have the reader in mind. You should guide them through the story using various elements, typography, images, illustrations and so on. Before you jump to the layout, check which assets are available to you, and check the copyright. The next step is to set up your pages in InDe...”

Harry Hepburn is a London-based graphic designer, who specializes in editorial design, specifically for newspapers. Growing up, he was always reading magazines and newspapers and eventually went on to study at art college. There, the then art director of The Sunday Times set a task to redesign the first three pages of the newspaper. Harry quickly became fascinated with newspaper design and was offered his first job in the industry by the same director.

Since then, Harry has worked for publications like The Telegraph, as well as The Sunday Times, helping them to tell important stories with his clean, concise, but punchy style. He’s also won several awards including the Society of Publication Designers Merit Award and the World’s Best Designed Newspaper along with his team in 2019.
