Introduction to Concept Art For Expressive Character Design
“Congratulations! You have now reached the end of this Domestika course. Thank you for enrolling! I hope you've enjoyed exploring the world of concept art through character design.
Before I say goodbye, let's do a quick run-through of the steps to complete your project: to design soldiers for a post-apocalyptic series.
Flesh out your character in your own mind by completing the character analysis questionnaire that I shared in Unit 2. Or, write a short origin story. Do anything that will get the creative juices flowing to give your character some depth!
Make sure you gather references for everything, from poses to wardrobe. If you can't find references, shoot them with a camera.
Use the drawing process as a tool to experiment with ideas. Answer the big questions first, regarding gesture, pose, and action. Then, progress to volume and wardrobe. Finalise the design with clean line art.

- Finally, begin the rendering process and incorporate your lighting.

Sammy Khalid (Chigg)
A course by Sammy Khalid (Chigg)
Sammy Khalid, known online as Chigg, is a concept designer, illustrator, and NFT artist. Born to a Sudanese father and Filipino mother, he spent his early childhood in the Philippines but grew up in Dublin, Ireland. Chigg originally studied computer science with the goal of becoming a software engineer but this didn’t fuel his passion for drawing and painting. Later, he was able to pursue a career that married elements of his interests together with his tech savviness. Most of Chiggs work involves designing characters, sets, vehicles, and props, for film, TV, and animation, utilizing both 2D and 3D approaches.
With a broad range of interests and a fervor for learning new skills, Chigg views his creative process as an evolution. He sees drawing, painting, and design as a visual representation of the work that you invest, what you’ve learned, and how well you understand the world around you. Chigg has worked for clients around the world including Warner Bros, Disney, Riot Games, and Netflix, and across titles such as Black Mirror, War of the Worlds series, and Artemis Fowl.
