About the final project for: Dynamic Animal Illustration for Children’s Stories

Dynamic Animal Illustration for Children’s Stories

“You've reached the end of this course. Congratulations! I hope you enjoyed it. Thank you so much for taking part in it! It is now time to work on your project. This could mean finishing the illustration you started while completing the exercises or you could start a brand new project! Either way, I strongly suggest you take the time to gather inspiration and make a unique project of your own. Make sure to keep track of your progress with different pictures of each step. It would be great if you could also explain the choices you've made along the way and tell me if you have any doubts. This will help me understand your creative process and guide you better if you need advice. Here are the main steps to follow to complete your project: Initial Doodles Choose the animal you want to draw and collect some photo references. You can also observe a real one. Then, doodle different poses so you understand how its body articulates and how the animal moves and behaves.

The Sketch Define your intention: what you want to convey in your drawing. From that, you will establish the action line and make a loose sketch of the animal's posture.
Once that is done, start thinking about volume and build up the sketch. Keep in mind the notion of the 3 parts and check the overall proportions, structure, and stability.
Refining Clean the sketch with a kneadable eraser or trace it onto a new paper (depending on your technique). Then, you can refine the lines and gradually add details.
Finally, if you want to, you can create an anthropomorphic character and have fun dressing it as you wish!
I am excited to see what you have created! Share your project in the forum when you finish. You can do so by clicking on "Create your project." I will respond to your posts and questions as soon as possible. In the meantime, I encourage you to take a look at what others created for this project and comment on their posts. This was a real pleasure for me and I hope it was for you too! Bye!”

“ Final Project Congratulations, you've reached the end of this course. I hope you enjoyed it and thank you so much for taking part in it. Before I go, I'll give you some last reminders about the final project. First of all, remember the importance of observation. For example, we don't want to draw a muscle in the shape of a rounded W or an ear of a bunny that is bent and if you unfold it, it would be twice as long as the other one. You should remember to always start from observation and not from a stylized illustration. Also, remember to choose your own animal. It can be your pet or your ...”

Julie Mellan is a French illustrator and self-confessed watercolor addict who specializes in illustrations for children’s books. She spent her childhood reading Beatrix Potter’s books and drawing animal characters from Disney movies, before going on to study classic drawing, painting, illustration, and animation at the French art school École Émile Cohl. After graduating, she continued to combine sketching and watercolors to create expressive animal characters, and eventually published her first book in 2013.

Julie uses traditional mediums to tell stories through her illustrations and create connections between characters. Her work has appeared in children’s books published by the likes of Penguin Random House, Clavis, and Fleurus.
