About the final project for: Contemporary Tapestry Weaving

Contemporary Tapestry Weaving

“Congratulations! We have now reached the end of this Domestika course. I hope you have learned all the necessary skills to create your own woven tapestry. Having followed each individual lesson and step of the process, you will see that you can come a long way to now be able to use the skills in a creative way. Therefore, I want to encourage you to be original and creative with your final project. I’d like to see your own personal style reflected in your tapestry. Before you leave now, let me give you a few tips and tricks to help you achieve this. Start out by looking for inspiration. Pinterest is a great place to save your favourite images of shapes, weaving pieces and textures. Once you're ready to really start working on your final design, make some rough sketches until you feel they have a nice balance. Don't forget to leave enough blank space for the exposed warp. When drawing it to scale, do it in pencil so you can still make adjustments. Use the marker when you’re completely happy with the outline of the sketch. Use a different colour to mark where you might add some texture, but remember you can change this later on. Don't be scared to experiment!

Then it's time to build your frame loop. Use pliers to hold the nails while you hammer. Don't forget to ensure the same amount of nails are sticking out. This will help you get nice, straight, even nails for your warp thread.
Now it's time to actually start weaving. Remember to take extra care not to pull too tight - there should always be enough slack to your yarn so you're not pulling the warp threads in from the side. Make sure you weave with the back facing you, tidying up the loose ends and messy bits as you go. If you want you can always check the front of the tapestry - just take care to then put your sketch back in the same position. Remove your shed stick when you get near to the top because otherwise, you will start to add too much tension to your warp thread. Finally, sew everything on nicely and tightly so your woven tapestry can live a long and happy life.
Once you're done, it's time to display your final piece - whether it be on the wall or on a side table for some colour!
It has been a pleasure to share my process of creating a woven tapestry with you. If you have any doubts or questions, don't hesitate to ask me in the forum. Of course, I really hope to see your final piece there as well. Simply share it by clicking on the button "Create your project". Don't forget to show us your process step by step so your fellow students can really fully appreciate how you got there. Of course, if you want to, also feel free to share your final design with me on Instagram using the hashtag #MarionWeymesDomestika. Remember that only practice makes perfect. Another way to learn is to look at what the other students on this course are doing and give them feedback. In the end, we always learn a lot from each other. It has been a pleasure to share my process of creating a woven tapestry with you. Thank you very much and I wish you all the best on your path to creating woven art. Goodbye for now!”
