“ Choosing a Portfolio Project The best way to have a portfolio that can land you your dream job is by making your portfolio look like you already have that job. The way that we'll do that is by creating personal projects. Since you want to work in children's book illustration, the projects you should be taking on are illustrating children's books. You don't have to illustrate a whole book, but you do have to make a series of images, at least three to five images per project.
