About the final project for: Building a Portfolio for a Career in Children’s Illustration

Building a Portfolio for a Career in Children’s Illustration

“Congratulations, you've reached the end of the course! I hope this is only the begging for you and that this project triggers your creativity and many more follow. Before saying goodbye, I'd like to do a quick recap on the steps you'll need to work on your illustration. Choose a book that you can have fun with while you learn. Then, when reading it, pay attention to all the details and take notes. This will help you make your character designs and choose the best scenes to illustrate the story. When making your storyboard, remember to consider how all images work together to tell one story. Make sketches that are easy to read for clients and have helpful information like where everything in the scene will go and where you will add lights and shadows.

When painting your final images, try to find ways to make it easier for yourself to maintain the quality of your work. For example, you can take note of what colors and brushes you are using or do the color blocking for all of your pieces simultaneously.
When you finish your illustrations, find different ways to use your work to promote yourself. For example, besides adding them to your portfolio, you can find illustration competitions or make a book dummy to show the project to publishers.
And that's all from me! Remember, I'll be in the forum answering your questions and commenting on your progress, so don't hesitate to share your project. Also, I want to encourage you to engage in conversation with your peers; we are a worldwide illustration community! See you soon!”

When choosing your book, pick something you can have fun with and something that brings you closer to getting the jobs that you want to work in. Also, remember that a chapter book is long enough for the story to be divided into chapters, but not long enough that you can read the whole book in a couple of days. Look for opportunities where you can let your personality shine through in the illustrations. This means that yo...”
