About the final project for: Interior Design Methodology for Custom Projects

Interior Design Methodology for Custom Projects

“Dear friends, we have reached the end of the course. It has been a pleasure to have been your teacher. Thank you very much for your confidence and your attention. Thank you also for the effort you have dedicated to improving your design process methodology. Now, I encourage you to apply the ideas you have just learnt into your own final project. Your final project can be any project you like, a real project you have in sight, or an ideal project of your own. Make sure you work out every phase at a time, and you start the next phase once you have reached the goals you have set at the beginning. Start by gathering and analysing the initial conditions and requirements. Visit the site, measure the space and note any critical elements and dimensions.

Meet your clients and find out how they want to use the space. Note any valuable information from our clients to deliver real custom-made projects, that capture and enhance their individuality. Analyse the initial criteria, set relationships, define priorities. You can visualize this with sketches and diagrams. Add your own inspiration to create a concept. Test your own ideas with different methods and representation tools.
Prepare your client presentations. Think about how to represent your ideas using the most appropriate tools, and how to communicate them with your client in a professional presentation.
Meet your clients to check and analyse the options. Agree and define an optimised final design solution. Produce a set of construction documents to get your ideas built. Think of drawing categories and don’t forget to add details and specifications. Think about the logic of the construction works and how to get your project built by the different trades. Now start thinking about how to capitalize your project through diffusion and publication.
Share your final work with us, including images and a brief explanation of the process, just like I did. Upload it by clicking on the "Create your project" button. I hope to receive your ideas and assignments in the course forums very soon. Please, be patient about receiving answers to your questions, as I need to attend other projects as well. Also, take good note of my answers and comments to other classmates, since the questions they post might be similar to yours. Use the opportunity to be aware of what other course mates share, and give advice to each other. You can learn a lot and exercise your skills by commenting and receiving feedback from others. Happy work! ”

YLAB Architects is an architecture and interior design studio founded by Yolanda Yuste and her partner Tobias in Barcelona. Yolanda’s natural ability for science meant she started out studying engineering but soon discovered a passion for architecture, which she went on to specialize in at art school in Berlin. There she met Tobias and together, they worked for renowned international studios and projects, including the World Expo in Hannover before moving to Barcelona and establishing YLAB.

Their studio focuses on combining architecture and design for small-scale projects. Their aim is to create warm, comfortable spaces using timeless materials with their client at the center. They have worked on everything from residential projects to business centers and health spaces. Their projects have been featured in publications such as Architectural Digest and The New York Times.
