About the final project for: Clay Portrait: Model a Full-Scale Face

Clay Portrait: Model a Full-Scale Face

“We have reached the end of this sculpture course, I hope you have enjoyed and learned a lot. The process is complex and, as you can see, you have to take many things into account before starting to work on your bust. Before saying goodbye, we are going to review the phases of the project so that you have them as a reference when presenting your project to the community: Project preparation Select a model that you have access to and that motivates you. It must be someone close to you who gives you arguments to explain something, surely you will forget to take some measure or photo, try that you can use him / her easily. Next, take the photos that you will have as reference to model. Then, analyze your photos and measurements, you don't need to do a great job of editing, select the main views, use them to define the limits of your project and, if possible, print them in real size.

Assembly of the structure Assemble the structure to support the weight of the portrait you are going to make. In Unit 3 we saw what you have to take into account to do it.
Skull modeling: profile, front and perimeter As we saw in Unit 3, start mounting the clay on your frame and gradually work the head and face of the bust.
Face and head, neck and clavicle In this step I adjusted the profile of the bust and placed eyes, nose and ears. I also started to work the neck and shoulders, and made a first approach to the proportions.
Factions In Unit 4 we gradually shaped the features of the bust, adjusting each other all the time. In the course I have explained how to build the different parts of the face, but in reality all the parts are related.
Retouching with photographs for reference Now is the time to work on the last touches of the bust. As you saw in Unit 5, we started by retouching with reference to the photos, working on them over and over again, and adjusting the overall masses. Remember to visualize all your photos trying to place your gaze on the axis of the camera and apply what you see in relation to the explanations. Repeat the process as many times as necessary, do not be obsessed with any area, everything, except the points that we have defined with the toothpicks, is provisional.
Sculpt with live model When you think the time has come, work with a live model, move a lot, the main projections and measurements have already been applied, now look at other angles, let yourself be carried away by sensations. Finally, I worked on the final details of the bust paying special attention to the hair and eyes. Finally, there will only be the emptying and baking process that I explained to you in the last two lessons of Unit 5. We have it!
Now share your final project with all of us by clicking on "Create your project". Remember to share both the final result of your sculpture and the steps that have led you to it. It would be great if you showed a picture of each step and added a brief explanation about what you have done in each one. So I can give you feedback. I also encourage you to actively participate in the forum. In addition to sharing your project, it is great if you help your colleagues or if you ask any questions; let us all form a creative and collaborative community. I am looking forward to seeing your project! ”

“Final project We reached the end of the course. You have seen that I have selected a person who will motivate me to make the portrait. I have taken pictures, measurements and, ultimately, information to later be able to build our project. I have edited, organized, ordered them to be able to work with them more easily. Then we saw how to work with the live model. I have shown you the materials you will need. We assembled a structure. We added general masses, created profiles, measured widths. Finally, we worked from the photographs. First the face, then the bust itself, looking for different...”
