“So I think this idea of the kind of critical mind and the critical assessment of our work is really interesting because If it comes into play too early when you're painting, it can be a real distraction and you can end up kind of inhibiting your painting or your drawing because you're being so critical. You're kind of assessing how you're going as you're doing it. If you can try and paint and just leave kind of park that critical part of your mind. to one side, then I think it just allows you the freedom to paint without worrying too much about making a mistake.
