About the final project for: Floral Illustration and Pattern Design

Floral Illustration and Pattern Design

“Congratulation on reaching the end of this course! Before I say goodbye, let me talk you through what I wish to see on your final project. First, make lots of simple sketches of your subject. Try to get loose and find a style that suits you. Remember it’s about finding your way of drawing, not just drawing exactly what you see.

Next, it’s time to plan your composition. Think about scale, space, complexity and direction. You can make it as simple or as complex as you like.
The colours you choose will make your image sing and come alive. Think about the overall look of your piece. Is it realistic or vibrant, warm or cold, harmonious or contrasted? Start with a limited palette and add more colours as you progress. Then you will paint your elements. Start with a light pencil sketch, before you add your first layer of paint and when it’s dry you can go back to add more colours and details.
Remember to scan your elements on a high resolution, at least 300 dpi or more. When you’ve separated your elements from the background you are ready to arrange your composition. Move them around and play with the elements until you are happy with the layout.
When you have your final artwork, it’s time to turn it into a pattern, by making a rapport. Make sure the pattern has a fluid movement and is not just repeating in blocks or chunks.
And finally, think of products that could be suitable for your pattern and make mock-ups with the help of templates or websites to make your portfolio shine!
And that wraps up my professional tips for you. Now it’s your turn to practice what you’ve learnt! Remember that you can also learn from the other students. Share your tips and experiences in the forum, and I will answer your questions. And you can also connect with me on Instagram @tboyko, use the hashtag #TatianaBoykoDomestika so I can keep track of your posts It’s been a real pleasure to share my art and my process with you and I’m looking forward to seeing what you will make for YOUR final project. ”

Now it's time for you to make your own design in the final project. Remember to make the design your own. Find a flower, a plant or leaf that intrigues you. It could be from your local flower shop, something you have found in a walk, or a picture from a botanical garden. Whatever you choose, remember what I taught you and put it into practise. Before I say goodbye, let's go over the steps you will take to complete your final project. Once you have ...”
