Inside a Creative Notebook: Explore Your Illustration Process

“Hi! We made it to the end of this Domestika course. I hope that my method for working an entire project inside a sketchbook has been helpful and that you feel inspired to experiment and play. As an artist, I have experienced the fear of blank pages many times. I feel that creating your regular practice inside your sketchbook is one of the best ways to spark your creativity and quiet down your inner demons. For the final project, I showed you how to work inside your sketchbook using this system. I created a manual for this method to demonstrate all the steps, exercises, and techniques inside it. You should pick the topic for your sketchbook. I’m looking forward to seeing your creative view. We started with the materials you can collect as memorabilia and reference images, which makes you use the conscious and unconscious modes of your brain.

Next, we started working directly on your sketchbook by creating a title page. This first step, the naming ceremony, will open up space for your project to exist, and it will give it an identity.
Then we move onto creating another layer of your universe by playing with colour and creating a palette.
After that, I showed you how to create a composition on a double page with your collection of memorabilia, generating silent dialogues between the elements. To start unlocking your visual language, I taught you how to tamper your research as a way to discover your very own.
I shared with you a set of several techniques that will help you create images quickly. The first and my favourite is paper cutting.
After that, I showed you how to create patterns using stamping techniques such as stencils, monotypes, and carving your stamp design. I also taught you how to create images using mixed techniques with textiles, such as collage and embroidery. Finally, I walked you through easy drawing techniques like kalamkari and miniature drawing.
This method has helped me fight creative blockages and unlocking my creativity by entering into a state of play. It has also helped me to create a regular artistic practice, and I hope it does the same for you. After you’ve finished your sketchbook, view your work with a gentle gaze. Find the coincidences and patterns that repeat through your work. Embrace the mistakes, as well as your beautiful creations. They will all become part of your visual language. Learn to recognize it and own it. Don’t be afraid to experiment. Trust your gut feeling and ideas. Also, don’t forget to participate in the forum. I will be there to answer questions and give some guidance. You can also provide ideas or feedback to other members of the community. That way you will learn a lot! It has been great to share my method with you. Thank you and goodbye! ”
