About the final project for: Introduction to Sumi-e Painting

Introduction to Sumi-e Painting

“You have learned the philosophy and theory of Suibokuga-Sumi painting, and why shikunhshi is important when learning Sumi painting. I have taught you a wide assortment of brush techniques and ink effects. Thematically, the drawings follow a very specific progression, and this is a point I wanted to focus heavily, as it is important to understand this art form. Being mindful of the spaces between objects is equally important. I hope you have enjoyed learning this process so far. Now it is time for you to create your artworks. I want you to create 4 shikunshi drawings using your composition, but different from my composition. I introduced two different ways in each lesson, but you can choose one of each in expression.

  • Bamboo
  • Chrysanthemum
  • Plum blossoms
Please look at the PDF files I attached in Units 4 and 5, where I give you tips to consider when working on your shikunshi. These go in-depth about the steps needed to create your artwork. To summarise, assemble your materials with intention. This ritual allows you to prepare your mind for creation. Remember that you have to check the ink density of the brush. Try applying it on a separate piece of paper and make a habit of checking it regularly. Then sketch the layout. When doing the Atari practice, put the example layout under your paper. Draw the main outlines with a piece of charcoal or a soft pencil. Apply the Sumi ink using the techniques you have learned so far. Finally, if you would like to add the moon or some bokashi techniques you can add more this detail as a final flourish to your shinkunshi. Lastly, I would love to thank you for taking my course at Domestika, and I hope the way I introduced it here was helpful, easy to understand and follow. However, if you have any questions, please ask me anytime. It might take some time to reply as I am a professional artist involved in many different projects, so please be patient about receiving my answers to your questions. But I will try my best in supporting you in learning and achieving Sumi painting. And also it will certainly be helpful to give your advice to other course mates in the forum, hearing other options in addition to yours. Goodbye! ”
