“Understanding Volume When we have well-defined volumes, it's easier for the eye to understand what object we're looking at. Defining volume is essential before you start watercolor painting. Since the paint is transparent, once you darken the area, it's difficult to lighten it. I made this drawing with three basic shapes. A cube, a pyramid and a sphere. Imagining the light is coming from left to right, let's try to see the shapes through the study of light and shadow.
