About the final project for: Batik Illustration: Wax-Resist Dyeing

Batik Illustration: Wax-Resist Dyeing

“I want to thank you for having reached the end of this course. I hope it helps you to enter the world of illustration with the Batik technique. For me it has been very gratifying to be able to share my knowledge with you. It is time to start your own path. Remember to practice with your tools and materials so that you can familiarize yourself and achieve your goals. It is important to prepare a guide sketch to accompany you throughout the process. If you are starting out, try not to be too detailed in your designs.

I recommend you create a color proposal on your sketches, so that you can plan the spaces and colors that you want to reserve. Once on the web, take your time to recognize which is the most suitable tool within your possibilities. Guide yourself once again, by the decisions made in your sketch. Prepare the wax very well according to the proportions shown, considering that the greater the presence of paraffin, the greater the cracking effect characteristic of Batik will be.
When dyeing, remember that you will be working with color overlays, as you will have previewed in your color proposal. Based on the type of dip dyeing that I taught you, I advise you to start from the lightest color to the darkest.
For dewaxing, it is important that you have an exclusive iron for this process, as well as enough papers to remove the wax completely. Remember, if you are going to use newspaper, it must have a minimum of three months of printing. Keep in mind that illustration in Batik is a slow process, requiring patience. Do not speed up any process and respect the times for waxing, staining and dewaxing required by this technique. And most importantly: enjoy your creative process.
Thanks again for your attention and company. Share your results and tasks in the forum, I will be reviewing as much as possible. A hug and thank you very much! ”

After earning a degree in visual arts, education, and art direction, Ikaro Batik discovered batik dyeing in 2014; since then, it has been his main form of artistic expression. He is an illustrator, teacher, and textile artist who also devotes his time to preserving the art of shibori and batik dyeing. His work is a reflection of the study, appreciation, and interest in spreading knowledge about the flora and fauna of Chile and the culture of its people in the Andes, the Atacama Desert, and the Patagonia region.

In 2016, he created the Taller Inicial de Batik to promote and share his knowledge about this technique by teaching workshops and personalized classes. Shortly after, he also began to travel around Chile to present his work and take part in cultural activities like the Aves en Batik exposition at the Valparaíso Bird Festival, the TV show Plan V on Canal 13C, and the Tan lejos y tan cerca exposition as a guest of the Indonesian Embassy in Chile.
