About the final project for: Digital Background Painting for Animation

Digital Background Painting for Animation

“The final project for this course is to paint your very own Digital Background! To make things a little easier, I have provided a lined background that you can use as your design. That way it doesn’t take away the focus on the painting part. Of course, you are more than welcome to use your own designs! Feel free to play around with how you want the painted background to feel. I would love to encourage you all to try your own take on this. What I have shown in these lessons are tools to help you do just that. It is your turn to shine! Think about what your background would look like if it is set in the sunset, or at night when the interior and signs light up, or even if this place was set in a horror movie, what would it look like? Finding those references that inspire your ideas will help you go a long way. Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone too, if you’ve never painted a nighttime scene before, try it out with this project! Final line design

Also, don’t forget to be patient with yourself. Background painting takes a lot of time and tries to get it. It takes lots of practice so don’t be discouraged or frustrated if it doesn’t look the way you want it. These hardships are part of learning something complex so be kind to yourself and take it one day at a time. If you’ve painted a background for the first time through this class, congratulations! Now that you’ve learned some basic skills in BG painting, you can start creating different types of backgrounds and slowly build your own collection of your own work! I really appreciate every single one of you for taking your time to take this course. I am very grateful that I can share some tips and guidance to help you along your background painting journey. I am available to answer your questions as you move along through the course but please be patient, I may not be able to answer your question immediately. I am a working professional, so it will take me a little time to get back to you. There is also a forum provided, don’t be afraid to share your work in progress and ask for feedback from others taking this class. You may find that having other inputs may give you some new ideas that you might’ve not thought of that would be a great addition to your final piece! Be helpful but don’t forget to also be kind! ”

Designer, Illustrator, and Background Painter for Animation

Since a young girl growing up in Hong Kong, Susan was captivated by eastern and western animations. This sparked a profound curiosity that would send her to art college in Los Angeles, California with the intention to fulfill her dream: working in animation. Although a Design internship at a motion design studio wasn’t what Susan hoped was her first job, it was where she discovered the art of background painting.

Through tons of passion and dedication, Susan got her first job as a background painter at Nickelodeon and hasn’t looked back since. She has worked on animation series for Netflix, Green Portal Studios (Solar Opposites for Hulu), Warner Brothers, Nickelodeon Animation Studios, and Cartoon Network.
