“What type style is your city? In this lesson, we'll look at different typographic solutions and which ones could fit your city. Let's go. While doing the adjectives and nouns exercise, we generated general ideas for our illustration, but those can also be used for type. I put some sketches in there which I thought might help me in a way. I referenced the neon signs a lot, which I found all over the city. I think maybe the letters could be built out of those signs, because the city is very compact, as we have seen. Maybe Tokyo itself could be a neon sign and the type could adjust in this fra...”

Birgit Palma is passionate about illustration and a self-proclaimed lettering addict, who is based in Barcelona, Spain. After studying her Master’s in Design at the University of Salzburg, Austria, she went to New York for an internship at design studio Vault49, and then to Barcelona to work at Vasava, where she worked in lettering, illustration, and design.
Today, Birgit works as a freelance illustrator and graphic designer, working for clients such as Nike, Coca-Cola, Adidas, Hyundai, Red Bull, Adobe, and many more.
When she’s not busy designing in her studio in Barcelona, she travels the world to teach workshops in type illustration in places like Guatemala, Germany, or Austria and has been lecturing at FH Salzburg and EINA Barcelona since 2016. Her work has been featured in Digital Design, DigitalArts, and Adobe Favs, among many more.
