About the final project for: Illustrated Digital Lettering

Illustrated Digital Lettering

“Dear students, First off: Congratulations! We have reached the end of the course, I hope you could get a glimpse of my process and of my way of working on a project, from scratch till the final artwork. Maybe you could take along some tips and tricks for your process. Maybe even some shortcuts! Being open and experiencing how somebody else works has helped me a lot to expand my knowledge and develop my style. Even directions I didn’t think I might be interested in and see those references appear back in my work. I think that in the end our learning process gets deeply influenced by playfulness, our curiosity to learn new things every day.

We looked into HOW I approach projects, I gave you a little guide to my kind of research and brainstorming and a way to come up with fresh ideas for your project. When creating, you have to see references as a starting point, as a dip in the pool full of possibilities. You learned that different references or different use of those will create a different outcome, which means a new illustration. So never think "oh, this has been displayed already I can’t do the same". Use the references, but in a different way! Next to this creative part, you also did your theoretic homework, you looked into the way modular fonts are constructed and created one on your own. You learned to use abstraction on photographic references and how to combine these types of illustrations with lettering. We looked into the program Illustrator, but also had our share of Photoshop, which we used to refine the artwork and give it some personality by adding shades, depth, and some small details. We looked at ways to use the artwork after completing it, how to showcase it in the best possible ways and so you can get the most out of it. I’m a super curious person and I’d love to see your outcomes! Please upload everything, also if you have trouble – I will give feedback on everything! Maybe sometimes you have to wait a bit, I also have other client work but I’ll promise to give you honest, constructive feedback! And if, in addition to the Domestika community, you want to share your creation with the whole world, you can upload photos of your work to Instagram with the hashtag #BirgitPalmaDomestika. I would love to see the whole process! Also, don’t forget to train your eye and also help out your colleagues. Give them valuable feedback, I think this is a good way to learn and enhance the vision of your project. Sometimes when encountering problems, I use a bit weird tactic: I explain my process to myself, in easy words, like I’d tell it to my mum, and that helps me to find solutions with myself. In any case: Keep on learning and creating, the creative world is full of possibilities and beautiful art. And the most important thing: Don’t forget to have fun on the way!”

“Final project We've reached the end of the Domestika course. I hope I taught you everything on how to build an illustrated type that communicates the emotion, the personality, and the soul of a city. Before parting ways I would like to go through the steps we've taken together to develop your final project. First, we started by learning the basic design principles that you'll need to know to start your own project. I showed you what a modular type is by working with little work pieces. We started to work in Illustrator by preparing our workspace. Afterwards, we threw an eye on technical fou...”
