Expressive Oil Portraiture: Explore the Alla Prima Technique

This was an excellent detailed course covering all areas of portrait painting. I learned a lot.

A very gentle introduction to painting portraits lots of great tips and techniques to put into practice. The step by step approach and the colour value exercises were really helpful. The varnishing and links supplied to resources where also great as this is something I have not been so confident with.

The course was very practical, have completed the painting alla prima same time with the teacher, while pausing in-between steps. Straight forward and clear steps to fallow, and I am pretty new to portraits and oil painting.

Greatly enjoyed Mr. Alpert’s painting and teaching style. The course is aptly named! I’m eager to put his tips to task! Would definitely recommend this course to anyone trying to loosen their painting style.

A really thorough lesson. I liked how he integrated the use of the computer and photoshop into the lesson, handy for people who have the monitor or iPad. I can see how it would be a little more limiting if you don’t have those resources. I also enjoyed his brushwork and using different sharpnesses to help pull the subject to the foreground.

It is very clear that he can paint very well. However the teaching is a bit bleh for me. No clear instructions on colour mixing or brushstrokes. A bit disappointing
