About the final project for: Silk Painting Techniques

Silk Painting Techniques

“We have reached the end of the course. We hope you enjoyed it and that it is actually a start. The beginning of a relationship with silk painting that leads you to paint and create fantastic things. For us, silk has been a route that we have been walking for years, that has taken us far and that we continue to travel. Don't forget that every journey has a beginning and that we also started from scratch. For us, painting on silk is a metaphor for life. That is, you have an idea of what you want to achieve, but then there are things or circumstances that make the end result different from what you thought. And notice that we say different, not worse. And it is a dialogue, where on the one hand are your hands and your knowledge, and on the other the silk and the way it behaves. Remember that environmental factors influence the result, it is not the same to work in a dry or humid environment, since drying times change and consequently the way colors mix and “move”. Also different types of silk give different results. Surely with practice you will get doubts and questions. Do not hesitate to share them on the forum. We will try to respond as soon as possible. But we also encourage you to contribute your experience, advice and comments, we are all sure to learn and enrich ourselves with them. Thank you very much and see you soon! ”

Sisters Cecilia and Mercè González, founders of craft and textile art workshop Desedamas, started their silk painting journey by teaching themselves the technique as a hobby and also because of its therapeutic qualities. The two come from vastly different professional backgrounds: Cecilia is a trained technical draftsperson, and Mercè, a chemical engineer.

In the year 2000 they decided to turn their passion into a way of life and began to sell their work at craft fairs throughout Spain. In 2006, they began to combine silk with textile art, painting silk for patchwork pieces and working with specific techniques. They currently work in equal measure between craft and textile art, and also share their knowledge with others through different forms of training. In 2013, they both earned the Maestras Artesanas (Master Craftsperson) diploma.
