How to Photograph Ghosts: Long-Exposure and Double-Exposure Tips

Learn how to create ghostly effects with your camera using long exposures, motion, transparencies, and double exposures to capture mysterious photos without the need for complex editing. Many ghostly images stem from a very simple idea: if something moves while the shutter is open, the camera captures it as a blurry, translucent, or incomplete figure. We won’t be discussing paranormal phenomena here, but rather creative photographic effects. In this guide, you’ll learn how to create ghostly-looking photos using long exposure, double exposure, motion, dim light, and composition. You don’t need to believe in ghosts or have professional gear—you just need to understand how light, motion, and time interact within an image. What You Need to Photograph Ghosts The equipment is simpler than it seems. Here are the recommended items: • A camera with a manual mode, or a smartphone with exposure control. • A tripod or a stable surface. • A remote shutter release or the camera’s self-timer. • Dim light: a flashlight, a lamp, or a safe candle. • A dimly lit space. • Light-colored clothing, translucent fabric, or moving objects. • If using a smartphone, an app or mode that allows for long exposures. • Optional: Photoshop, Lightroom, or an editing app to enhance the effect. The tripod is one of the most important elements. While the subject moves, the background must remain perfectly still; if the camera shakes, everything will appear blurry and the ghosting effect will be lost amid the noise.
