I've always enjoyed art, and growing up in the 90's I was captivated by the dynamic illustrations of comic books. I studied art in grade school and high school, and while I considered myself capable - I've always struggled to be disciplined and consistent. This often lead to a "I could do better if I tried harder, or put in more time" mentality, which I feel was a coping mechanism that I employed to explain away my mediocrity. I still have the urge to make those excuses like I used to, but I'm fighting it. Comparing my art to that of my immensely talented friends was also one of the reasons I think I gave up drawing and painting, despite how much I enjoyed it. I didn't feel that I measured up to others, and that was discouraging. In retrospect, they were putting in the time and effort that I was incapable of applying, and reaping the benefits of their efforts. I've always known that there's no magic trick to creating fine art, it's simply the willingness to dedicate the time and repetition required, and to hone your skills with the tools of the trade. I'm hoping that a structured course will encourage me to be more consistent, to hold myself to a schedule, and to help me overcome my excuses.
I enjoy using bic pens, ink, gouache, water colour and acrylic paints. I'm trying to expand my mind when it comes to mediums, and push myself out of my comfort zone.
