Free Download: Color Theory and Terminology Guide

Get to grips with key color terms and concepts with this handy, practical seven-page guide
Color plays a vital role in our everyday lives, influencing our thoughts, impacting our reactions, and creating strong emotional associations. It also affects us on a physical level: our eyes can be soothed or irritated by colors; they can increase blood pressure, suppress appetite, or even help us save energy.
But, to get the most out of colors, first, we need to understand them. If you get confused between terms like hue, value, saturation, and variation – and how they all relate to each other – look no further than this free guide from artist, illustrator, and Domestika teacher Laura McKendry (@laura_mckendry).

Laura is all about experimentation. Her courses encourage you to play with tools, techniques, and especially color. She knows teaches you how to create contrast and tone and have fun with the possibilities watercolors provide. She takes inspiration from the world around her and achieves beautiful results with a paintbrush.
When you explore color, it's important to start with the theory behind the color wheel (and how to use it), before going on to learn how to identify hue, value, and intensity.
Helping you understand how to develop color combinations, Laura's seven-page resource exclusively for the Domestika community identifies primary, secondary, and tertiary colors. It then looks at colors that are complementary or analogous to each other or a combination of the two.

Using the guide, you can learn to identify a hue and its composition in the color wheel and how to vary it by gradually adding more of a primary color. Discover what the value of color depends on, and learn how to achieve different values (also known as tone).
We also define a color by its saturation, or intensity, which tells us how clean or dirty, vibrant, neutral, or dull a color feels. You can create a whole variety of one single color by varying the hue, value, and saturation. Get exploring color combinations, as the possibilities are endless!

The symbolic meaning of colors can help you give customers an idea of your product or business. When choosing the colors you use to advertise your business, you want to make sure that the meanings of colors match what you want to portray.
When you are choosing a color for your company logo, advertising, and business cards, you may decide that you want to poll your potential customers to get an idea of how they think of your business. For example, how callmechat did it. The color immediately conveys the character of the company. If their feelings agree with what you want to portray, you may have already chosen the best colors for your business and advertising. If they don’t agree with how you want your business to be thought of, you may want to consult an expert on business graphics and have a new logo designed. In the long run, this will help your business grow into what you want it to be.

@dzwicker0 Hi! Sorry to hear you're having difficulties and thanks for writing to us. We've checked the download and it appears to be working.
Is there an error message appearing for you when you try to download it? Generally, we recommend you download the file from a computer (rather than a mobile). The file size is also around 70MB, so it may take a little while.
Thanks!
