5 Tolkien Books Beyond The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings

Every year on March 25, fans around the world celebrate Tolkien Reading Day, an event organized by The Tolkien Society since 2003 to honor and promote the author’s works.
To mark the occasion, we’re recommending five books by J.R.R. Tolkien that go beyond The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. If you’re eager to explore more of his rich world-building, these are must-reads.
1. The Silmarillion
Published in 1977 and edited by his son, Christopher Tolkien, The Silmarillion is essential for understanding the mythology of Middle-earth. It tells the story of the world’s creation, the early ages, and the great struggles of elves and men long before the events of The Lord of the Rings.

2. The Children of Húrin
Based on tales from The Silmarillion, this novel follows the tragic story of Túrin Turambar, a hero doomed by Morgoth’s curse. With a darker tone and a narrative reminiscent of Greek tragedies, this book is perfect for readers seeking a deeper, more dramatic tale within Tolkien’s legendarium.

3. Beren and Lúthien
One of the most iconic love stories in Tolkien’s works, "Beren" and "Lúthien" tells the tale of a mortal man and an elven maiden who defy fate to be together. This story was deeply personal to Tolkien, who had “Beren” and “Lúthien” engraved on his wife Edith’s tombstone.

4. The Fall of Gondolin
One of the earliest stories in Tolkien’s universe, The Fall of Gondolin recounts the destruction of a great elven city at the hands of Morgoth. Full of heroism, betrayal, and epic battles, it’s a thrilling read for those fascinated by Middle-earth’s rich history.

5. The One Ring and Other Essays on Tolkien
This collection of essays explores Tolkien’s influences, mythology, and the lasting impact of his works on literature and popular culture. It’s a great read for anyone wanting to dive deeper into his creative mind.

J.R.R. Tolkien’s legacy goes far beyond his most famous novels. These books immerse you in the myths, legends, and tragedies that shape the history of Middle-earth, showcasing the depth of his imagination and storytelling.
