10 Bathroom Ideas for Your Renovation
Planning a bathroom renovation? Discover a range of stylish and functional bathroom ideas to help you create your dream space.
Maximizing Small Bathroom Spaces
Depending on where you live, bathroom spaces can be reduced to a few square meters. In the world there are contrasting concepts for delimiting spaces, in Tuen Mun, Hong Kong for example we might find ourselves showering whilst sitting on the toilet. Across the Pacific we observe an opposite predicament, in the Favelas in Rio de Janeiro, you can go to the bathroom anywhere giving you an unprecedented square footage of restroom space, although they might not refer to it as such...
1. Creative Storage Solutions:
Attaching wire baskets to bathroom walls is a good idea to store everything from lightweight towels to bars of soap. And if you don't even have enough space for that, another common solution is carving out a chunk of the wall for extra storage space... Basically make your bathroom bigger with a hammer and surprise your landlord!
2. Illusion of Space: Colors and Mirrors:
Painting your walls white is a known method to make a space appear bigger, and if you have no natural light, it will make the space brighter too. But if you'd like a more "expensive" idea: mirrors give the illusion of extra space even better. Cover one wall with a mirror and the bathroom will rejoice in extra depth, although you might recoil at your own constant reflection... It all comes at a cost!
Eco-Friendly Bathroom Ideas
Are you done flushing your wet wipes down the toilet? Do you shower in tears to save water? Here are even more ways to be "Eco-Friendly" (which doesn't always mean "friendly"):
3. Sustainable Materials:
Ceramic, Steel, Bamboo, Brass and Reclaimed Wood are the most popular and sustainable materials right now according to instagram's tags... I guess I'll take their word! Bamboo does sounds good: It is a highly renewable material which doesn't require fertilizers to be grown, and it also regenerates time and time again from its own roots. But be ware that bamboo flooring problems can occur if moisture becomes absorbed!
4. Water-Saving Fixtures
Older toilets use about 3,5 gallons (or around 13 liters) of water every time they flush. By replacing them with high-efficiency toilets, you can save more than 2 gallons (7,5 liters) of water per flush. Your toilet will be more efficient than you.
Luxury Bathroom Features
Okey, let's leave all that poor people "fixes" behind:
5. High-End Bathtubs and Showers:
Do you know Toto...? The band...? Well they make luxury bathtubs now! Only, for some reason they seem to be based in Japan as of recently. I thought they were originally from "Africa".
But if you'd like your bathtub to walk away like in cartoons you might want to check out the claw-foot tub selection by L'Epi d'Or or Victoria + Albert. Trust me I knew these brand names before researching for this article!
6. Smart Bathroom Technology:
We mentioned a highly efficient toilet before but they can also be friendly and cook for you... Well, that would be unsanitary but friendly nonetheless...! In a more realistic note Interactive LED mirrors can help you feel as if you've never left the club. Also look up "Adjustable privacy glass", since they give you a more hygienic option than curtains. For me a Floor heating system is the dream! Only don't make it out of Bamboo, we already know what will happen!
DIY Ideas
I know you might be happy with your decoration consisting of finished and almost finished toilet paper rolls all over your counters and floors but some ideas from the bast "outside" might help you from time to time:
7. Upcycling for Bathroom Decor
Are you an alcoholic? We are here to help you! Did you ever think of making your bathroom floor out of bottle caps in a mosaic form? Well, now your drinking can have a productive and creative purpose! It looks surprisingly good. Look it up!
And if you are even more of an alcoholic! You can always create a bath mat out of wine corks. Glue them to a base and let your knees rest easy when you eventually disgorge in the toilet after all that wine...
8. Homemade Bath Products
You can make your home feel like a luxury hotel by putting some ribbons on your towels. If you have leftover fabric you can easily cut and sew it to make a cylinder with the dimensions of your now tightly hugged towels.
A very popular DIY decor hack right now is painting cristal jars to use as storage, if you want to follow the herd and join the sheep led by the shepherd, you are welcomed to do so. But if you have any rebellion left in your heart and want to make a change in this unjust world you might want to try the towel ribbons...!

9. Safety Features
According to a study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 200,000 people each year are treated in emergency rooms for injuries that happened in the bathroom. So Non-Slip Mats and Grab Bars are a must! But for extra comfort along with your safety you might like the idea of bath bench or a shower chair.
10. Fun and Functional Design Elements
Introducing interactive elements such as bath toys or vibrant wall decals not only infuses fun and excitement into the space but also encourages an inviting atmosphere. Also a goofy ghost towel can be a fun costume and dry agent and even decorative element at the same time! Only maybe that is not so "elderly-friendly", is it...?
