Inside the Writer's Studio: An Interview with Author Jane Corry

Join us in an insightful interview with Sunday Times bestselling novelist, Jane Corry, discussing her passion for writing, daily routine, and inspiration.

Dive into the writing world of Jane Corry, Sunday Times bestselling novelist with a penchant for short stories. Jane's reputation for captivating narratives stems from thousands of stories written for various women's magazines, and her novels that have enthralled readers worldwide. Now, Jane is sharing her writing wisdom through her Domestika course, "Creative Writing Techniques for Short Stories."

In this candid interview, Jane opens up about her passion for writing, her disciplined routine, her sources of inspiration, and her perspective on the best and challenging parts of being a writer.

Q: Jane, what would you say to someone who wants to become a writer?

A: "My first thought is that writing chooses you rather than the other way around. If you have a slow-burning ambition that you want to write and you feel that stirring, you probably are a writer. I've always wanted to write and do that for a living."

Q: Could you share how a typical day in your life looks like?

A: "I'm at my desk straight after breakfast. If I don't start writing then, I feel uneasy for the rest of the day. I write through to lunchtime, often returning to writing in the early evening after spending my afternoons differently. I'm a very involved granny and I love playing tennis and swimming in the sea."

Q: Where do you find your inspiration?

A: "My inspiration comes from life. It could be what I see walking down the street, an idea that might drop into my head, or a television programme where somebody might say something. It's really important to keep your mind open and jot down any ideas as soon as you get them."

Q: What do you love about your job and what challenges do you face?

A: "The best part of my job is that wonderful feeling when I'm writing a story, especially when starting it. I'm swept away in the story and my characters, and I'm in a world of my own. The more difficult part of writing a short story is the final revision, making sure everything is right. It's worrying, in case maybe the story isn't good enough. And it's waiting to see if your story is accepted."

Jane's Domestika course, "Creative Writing Techniques for Short Stories," offers an extensive exploration of character and plot development, proofing and editing, helping aspiring writers to craft their first short story.
